SALEM, Ohio — The Columbiana County Buckeye Dairy Boosters met April 20 at the Center of Salem for the annual spring banquet.
This year, the group was celebrating the crowning of the 30th Columbiana County Dairy Princess. All the past princesses were invited and 11 attended, sharing ideas and memories from their reigns.
They included: Diana Zehentbauer Brown (senior, 1981); Terry Crowl Himes (junior, 1981); Jennifer Burbick Rothwell (junior, 1982); Brenda Blickersderfer Smallwood (junior, 1983); Christina Davis Davies (senior, 1984); Jill Sanor Amos (senior, 1988); Jennifer Smith Zehentbauer (1991); Melissa Cooper Fieldhouse (2002); Rylee Farmer (2005); Jill Zehentbauer (2006); and Katie Brown (2007).
Reign review
2007’s Princess Katie Brown reported on her reign as princess. She attended local events for promotion such as the Northeast Ohio Holstein Show, Salineville Salt Festival and ice cream-eating contests at the Columbiana Firestone Festival and Relay for Life.
During the county fair, she participated in the opening ceremonies, mini showmanship, passed out ribbons during dairy shows and made a basket for the 4-H benefit auction.
Brown is the daughter of Diane Brown of Salineville. She is currently attending Kent State University studying respiratory therapy.
The 2008 scholarship winner is Kevin Crist of Homeworth; he is the son of Steve and Edna Crist. He will graduate from West Branch High School this spring, and then will be attending Ohio State University, majoring in agribusiness.
New princess
Karen Steiger was crowned the 2008 Dairy Princess; she is the daughter of Joyce and Bart Steiger of Alliance. She is a senior at West Branch High School and is active in track, 4-H, FFA, National Honor Society, Ruriteens, Pep Club and her church youth group.
This fall, she will be attending Capital University, majoring in nursing.
The runner up was Erica Stieger of Alliance; she is also the daughter of Joyce and Bart Steiger. She is attending West Branch Junior High.
Dairy princess judges this year were Debbie Grammer of Grammer Jersey Farm in Sebring and past princess Christina Davis Davies.
