MINERVA, Ohio –If progress is measured by change and adapting to the trends in the local area, Minerva True Value has been making progress for years.
Purchased in 1975 by Bob and Shirley Simms, the business name then was Wadsworth Plumbing and Heating. In the late 1970s, hardware was added to fill a local need and to respond to the decrease in sales resulting from the slowdown in the new housing market due to high inflation.
New product lines were added and existing lines were reviewed and changed.
In 1998 the hardware store was bursting at the seams at the 900 E. Lincoln Way location, so a new larger store was built at the current 16400 Bayard Road location on the north side of Minerva.
Again lines of merchandise were expanded and existing lines were reviewed and changed, and an equipment rental department was added.
In 2000, Jill and Mike McDermott bought the hardware store.
The couple has continued this progress over the last eight years, carrying on the family tradition.
They added a John Deere shop and more Carhartt merchandise, which now has a room in the front of the store. More shirts, jackets, jeans and hats have been added, along with the brand’s women’s line, and a changing room.
The John Deere shop focuses primarily on tractors, children’s toys and ride-on toys, but the store also carries John Deere pet accessories.
With the trend of decorating outside areas of the home growing every year, owners have brought in more patio furniture and in new styles. Patio heaters and table-top urns for heating on cool nights are new for 2008.
As the years have gone by many stores have been forced to sell products made overseas. Minerva True Value has had to as well, but prides itself in selling many goods made in the U.S.
The most popular ones this time of year are the Weber grills, most of which are made in the USA. A great selection of grilling supplies and an alternative brand of grills with the Grill Zone label will make your summer cookouts effortless and tasty.
Without the products in the new outdoor power equipment area, the view from that patio would not be as good.
The large power equipment is featured and surrounded with shelves of smaller equipment, accessories, repair parts, fertilizers, grass seed and gloves.
Minerva True Value is proud to be part of the True Value family of stores. Being part of this buying group of more than 4,000 stores enables a local store to buy at prices that allow them to be competitive in today’s market.
They are also proud of the service that their staff, your friends and neighbors, gives every day.
Stop by today at 16400 Bayard Road, just off state Route 183 on the north side of Minerva. They are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Reach True Value by phone at 330-868-7709.
