SCIO, Ohio — Peggy Ann Croxton Dewell, 79, of Scio, Ohio, died in the Harrison County Home on Friday, August 1, 2014, after battling Alzheimer’s disease for 10 years.
She was the last survivor of the pioneering Croxton family. She was also the last Croxton to be born in the Croxton mansion in Washington Township, Carroll County. The land it sat on was acquired by federal land grant in 1810 by her great-great-grandfather William Croxton.
Mrs. Dewell was born Dec. 25, 1934, and was preceded in death by her parents, Dwight E. and Gladys M. Hawk Croxton, and her sister Gwen (Harold) Moreland. On June 6, 1953, she married John Dewell, who survives, along with two children, Terri Lynn of Bowerston, Ohio, and John Jr. of Cody, Wyoming.
In 1958, the couple bought their first farm near Scio, where they milked cows, and bought their second farm in 1967, continuing to milk cows and raising 50-60 head of beef cattle.
She was a member of the former Scio Farm Women’s Club, Mount Hope Grange, Harrison County Soil and Water Conservation District auxiliary, Harrison Co. Farm Bureau, National Rifle Association and Ohio Gun Collectors Association.
She was a member of The Shepherds Chapel in Gravits, Arkansas.
The family requested no services or visitation.
