HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Sale of Champions kicked off the Junior Livestock Sale Jan. 10 at the 2012 Pennsylvania Farm Show. Grand and reserve champion lambs, pigs, steers and goats sold to the highest bidders, bringing $35,200.

Center stage stood Stetson, the 1,315-pound grand champion market steer bred and owned by Lindsay Upperman, 19, of Chambersburg, Franklin County. When the gavel dropped, Hoss’s Steak and Sea House, a longtime supporter, won the top bid of $10,500.
Jacob Diamond, 19, of Smithfield, Fayette County, exhibited the grand champion market goat that sold to New Holland Sales Stables for $2,400.
Hayden Demniak, 11, of Carmichaels, Greene County, sold his grand champion market lamb for $3,000 to New Holland Sales Stables. Hatfield Quality Meats purchased the grand champion market hog, owned by Austin Wivell of Smock, Fayette County, for $4,200.
Chris McCauley of Atglen, Chester County, sold his reserve grand champion steer to John Rock Inc. for $6,000. Fulton Bank, Bell & Evans Poultry and Lebanon Valley Auction Services collaborated to purchase Alix Hochard’s reserve grand champion market lamb for $2,700. Hochard is from Somerset County. The reserve grand champion market goat, owned by Madison McKinley, was sold to Bedford Ford and Bedford Chrysler for $2,200.
Rounding out the Sale of Champions was Abigail Wright and her reserve grand champion market hog, which was auctioned off to Saubel’s Market for $4,200. The total gross for the sale was $281,977.52 for 420 animals.
Scholarships
Prior to the sale, 26 youth were presented with $91,000 in scholarships.
The Sale of Champions helps to fund a portion of the scholarships along with generous donations from members of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Scholarship Foundation.
Outstanding 4-H leaders were honored during the livestock sale.

Pennsylvania 4-H Swine Leader Award: Charlie Hall, Julian, Centre County
