MANTUA, Ohio — Roy N. Brugmann, 80, died Oct. 28, 2011, at his residence.
Born in Shalersville Township on May 16, 1931, he was the son of Oscar and Annie (Paserk) Brugmann Sr.
A lifetime resident of the Mantua and Shalersville areas, he began his career in the sand and gravel business as a young boy, following in the footsteps of his parents in the operation of Oscar Brugmann Sand & Gravel Inc. Following the death of his father in 1975, Mr. Brugmann became president of the company.
An active community member, he was involved with the Portage County 4-H Beef Committee, Portage County Beekeepers Association, Ohio Aggregate Association, Robinson Memorial Foundation, numerous sponsorships of youth baseball teams, and was a supporter of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He also continued the family farm, raising of black Angus beef cattle.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta Jo (Zalewski) Brugmann, whom he married Nov. 27, 1954.
Also surviving are his children, Debbi Jo Bailey, Alan Brugmann and Shannon Jo Bretz, all of Mantua; Lori Jo Duriak, and Todd Brugmann, both of Shalersville; and Darren Brugmann of Snohomish, Wash; his mother, Annie “Sally” Brugmann of Mantua; brother Oscar “Sonny” Brugmann Jr. of Shalersville; sisters Olga Van Auken of Shalersville and Joan Martin of Mantua; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Brugmann Sr. in 1975, and two brothers, Harry and Richard Brugmann.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 11045 St. Joseph’s Boulevard, Mantua, Ohio, Nov. 2, 2011, with Rev. Fr. Michael Garvey officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Brugmann Family Farm.
Memorial donations are suggested to either the Portage County Steak Makers 4-H or the Portage County Animal Protective League.
