OBERLIN, Ohio — Lorain County JVS FFA members — students in the Landscape and Greenhouse Management and Industrial Equipment Mechanics programs — attended the 360° Leadership Conference in Dublin, Ohio. The conference helps students with leadership development.

Students who attended were: Don Sabella, Landscape and Greenhouse Management senior; Sydney Collier, Landscape and Greenhouse Management junior, Lou’Vaughn Johnson, Landscape and Greenhouse Management junior; Aidan Marang, Industrial Equipment Mechanics junior; Michael McDonald, Industrial Equipment Mechanics junior; Bailey Zorn, Landscape and Greenhouse Management junior; Thomas Keller, Landscape and Greenhouse Management junior; William Keller, Landscape and Greenhouse Management junior; Nicholas Borlaug, Industrial Equipment Mechanics junior; and Savannah Roby, Landscape and Greenhouse Management junior.

Also, Lorain County JVS FFA members competed at the FFA Nursery and Landscape State Competition at the Columbus Convention Center.

Mercedes Murphy, senior Landscape and Greenhouse Management student from Amherst,  placed first in the district and at the state competition, she finished 17th individually out of 130 contestants.

Don Sabella, a senior from Amherst, placed second in the district and finished 25th individually.

The students’ individual scores were compiled for an overall team score and the Lorain JVS team, consisting of Murphy, Sabella, Sydney Collier, junior from Clearview, and Noah Hammond, senior from Firelands, finished eighth out of 22 teams.

MILLERSBURG, Ohio — West Holmes FFA officers and greenhand officers went to West Holmes Middle School, Jan. 24, to talk with eighth graders about FFA. Members included: Juanita Miller, Abby Rohr, Cade Patterson, Taylor Feikert, Lexi Ogi, Chase Stitzlein, Leon Williams IV, Braxton Lint, Clay Shepler, Natasha Averbukh, Addison Yates, Kylie Ramirez, Emmett Myers, Rebecca Sprang,  Jayme Pennell, and Ethan Drzazga.

On Jan. 25, the West Holmes FFA held an eight grade recruitment day in the ag shop.

FFA members went snow tubing at Snow Trails in Mansfield, Jan. 29. Members include; Jaeden Roloff, Lexi Ogi, Madison Stitzlein, Chase Stitzlein, Travett Boughman, Taryn Grassbaugh, Lucas Shaum, Jayme Pennell, Abby Rohr, Addison Yates, Mac Pingledis, Cierra Matthew, Mariah Miller, Anna Irwin, Laura Irwin, Bree Houin, Phillip Lepley, Mosey Schlabach, Tate Miller, John Hughes, Nathan Yoder, Jake Napier, Mike Kick, Hunter Smith, Hayley Davis, Ethan Drzazga, Braxton Lint, Leon Williams IV, and Clay Shepler.

Ohio State FFA Treasurer Emily Mullen talked to all of the West Holmes ag classes about being leaders Jan. 30.

Four members of the chapter went to the Lorain County JVS for the district nursery landscape contest; Drew Mast, Marissa Lamp, Destiny Pozworski and Mac Pingledis, Jan. 11.

The competed again Jan. 17 and added team member James Billups. They finished 18th as a team.

LOUDONVILLE, Ohio — The Loudonville FFA and FFA Alumni annual strawberry sale has begun. The chapter is selling whole flats of freshly picked Florida strawberries, which will be delivered the week of March 12.

Cost of a flat is $19 (cases are no-longer offered). The berries are picked in Florida and delivered days later.

They are a smaller, sweet berry and are great for eating fresh, freezing or jam-making. The group is also selling D. B. Yummers barbecue sauce in mild, spicy or island varieties.

Also, the Portz family is selling maple syrup. The syrup is packaged in glass bottles, gallon jugs, or 12-bottle cases. Also on the spring fundraiser is Jack Links Beef Jerky, being sold in five varieties by the case.

Contact any Loudonville FFA member or call the LHS Ag Department by Feb. 21 at 419-994-4101. The profits from the first pallet of berries will be used to add to the Loudonville FFA Alumni’s scholarship fund. The remaining money raised will assist in sending students at a reduced cost to FFA functions.

• • •Norwayne FFA

CRESTON, Ohio — The Norwayne FFA chapter held a ceremony for students receiving Discovery Degrees, Greenhand Degrees and Chapter Degrees Jan. 9.

FFA alumni Kurt Steiner spoke during the event, sharing how his FFA classes helped shape his life.

On Dec. 19, the FFA chapter held a Dodge for a Cure tournament in which eight high school and 12 middle school teams signed up to play dodgeball.

The chapter charged $1 for students to watch the tournament and $16 to play. A total of $1,000 was raised with all proceeds going to Akron Children’s Hospital research. The winning team also shaved the heads of two teachers.
