Quilt patterns blanket Clinton County barns for bicentennial

WILMINGTON, Ohio — In honor of the Clinton County bicentennial celebration this year, some 52 barns will sport patterns of yesteryear for the Barn Quilt Tour.

Highlights

As a distinct event of the 2010 Clinton County bicentennial, five of the county’s barns will be highlighted June 12 and 13, 2010.

Each featured barn will depict a different era of history over the last 200 years. As an added bonus, Pamela Gray, the Barn Consultant, will be at the Clinton County Historical Society June 10 at 7 p.m., presenting The Americanization of the Family Farm.

This program is free to the public courtesy of the Clinton County Barn Quilt Project.

The hours of the Barn Quilt Tour event are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 12 and noon to 5 p.m. June 13.

Featured barns

The barns featured as part of the official Tour in June are:

The Winkle Farm, owned by Ed and LuAnn Winkle, displays the quilt design “Optical Illusion”. It is located at 3308 Martinsville Road., Martinsville.

The Hadley farm, located at 1133 Lebanon Road., Clarksville, will depict the 1860’s. The barn displays the quilt design “Rebecca’s Freedom Lily” from an early 1800’s family quilt.

The Stokes Berry Farm, with the quilt design “Berry Basket” on their bank barn, has been operated by the Stokes Family for three generations. Their rolling hills of strawberry fields and raspberries are located at 2822 Center Road, Wilmington.

The Murphy Homestead, located at 2846 Starbuck Road, Wilmington, will be demonstrating farming practices from the 1940’s with plowing, disking and planting demonstrations using machinery from the 1930’s, ’40’s, and ’50’s.

The Fliehman Farm, located at 13422 state Route 22 & 3 East, Sabina, will be the host for the final stop in the activity laden tour of barns and history. Ken and Ginger Fliehman, along with the East Clinton FFA, will host a taste of the 1970’s. There will be a petting zoo and a step back in time, with foods from that era.

Tickets

Advance tickets for the two day event are $10.00 (12 and under are free) and will be on sale at the Cotton Junky Quilt Shop and the Clinton County Historical Society.
