Carroll County cattleman and grazier Earl McKarns, left, hosted Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee on Shamrock Vale Farm June 19. Gee visited the farm as part of his whirlwind statewide tour and to recognize McKarns as an Ohio Professional Beef Producer. A plaque for the award was presented on behalf of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association and Ohio State University Extension. While visiting the farm, Gee learned about beef cattle production and the farm’s rotational grazing program from McKarns and his son, Dan.
Listen in as Earl McKarns shares some of his concerns on the condition of Ohio’s farm foundation with Ohio State University Presiden E. Gordon Gee, and see how Gee responds.
Earl and Dan McKarns use a unique approach to stockpiling forages in their grazing program. In the slideshow here, watch and listen as Earl McKarns explains how they use small round bales to graze the beef herd year-round.
