MARYSVILLE, Ohio — The Ohio Beef Council will begin collecting the additional $1 state beef checkoff June 2.
The checkoff increase from $1 to $2 per head follows a referendum in which Ohio beef producers voted in favor of the increase.
Can request refund
One dollar will be collected as part of the existing federal checkoff. The additional dollar is result of the state checkoff referendum and will be refundable by written request on an approved form which producers can request from the Ohio Beef Council, at 614-873-6736 or beef@ohiobeef.org.
Forms will also be available by request at auction markets.
The beef checkoff is assessed on all cattle, including beef, dairy and veal, when there is a change in ownership.
The additional checkoff funds will be used in Ohio for programs designed to increase beef demand.
In late March, the Ohio Department of Agriculture certified 2,118 votes in the Ohio Beef Marketing Program Referendum. Of those, 1,527 votes, or 72 percent of the total, were cast in favor of the referendum and 591 votes, or 28 percent, were opposed to the increase.
The Ohio beef checkoff is payable to the Ohio Beef Council and can be mailed to 10600 U.S. Highway 42, Marysville, OH 43040.
