Massachusetts breeding sheep sweep supreme champions at KILE

HARRISBURG, Pa. –Supreme champion ewe and ram were selected from two different Massachusetts farms at the 2009 Keystone International Livestock Exposition in Harrisburg Oct. 3 from among 1,143 entries and 14 breeds of sheep.

The supreme champion ram was the grand champion Southdown, exhibited by Clifford Thayer of Splendorview Farms in Cummington, Mass.

“This is an excellent set of individuals,” said Judge Judy Moore of Eagle, Mich., as she looked upon the champions. “We’re looking for something that is going to represent the breed really well.”

Two other judges joined Moore for the decision of supreme champion — David Cook of Wakeman, Ohio, and Greg Deakin of Cuba, Ill.

Together the judges also chose the grand champion Tunis ewe as the supreme champion Ewe, who is bred and owned by Anna Charest of Small Fry Farm in Brimfield, Mass.

Charest’s Tunis ewe was the grand champion of the National Tunis Sheep Show held during the Open Breeding Sheep Show.
