In his book titled The Great Awakening, Jim Wallis relates the importance of integrity and accountability in doing what’s right and proper in finding solutions to our greatest challenges in life.
Unfortunately, wrong decisions have caused chaotic proportions from our depressed economy, scandals of pork-barrel spending, the ability of special interest money channeled to determine policy decisions, just to name a few on our national scene. Greed has become the name of the game.
The increase in drug crimes, murder, rapes and domestic violence seem to escalate daily. Our values are so misdirected that society is suffering in great proportions in our nation.
Whatever occupies our thoughts and gets our attention will shape our choices and therefore our lives.
In the following illustration, Jim Wallis depicts the choice mankind has in choosing his own destiny and the welfare of fellow beings.
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.
He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
“The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
And now we have learned tax cuts for the rich and the trickle down theory of wealth ditribution heralded by the Republican Party for the last 30 years is nothing more than a ripoff.
They can look at all the homes and farms for sale, and the families lives that have been destroyed, then reach around and pat themselves on the back and proclaim their right to the freedom to do so!
I also am disgusted at the support our clergy has given to this political agenda which has caused countless divorces, suicides, and the destruction of families.
