How to report mask-wearing violations in Ohio

Recently, I stopped going inside gas stations. My decision wasn’t just a result of the continuously climbing cases of COVID-19 in Ohio and around the United States. The rapidly increasing spread was a part of it; however, the biggest consideration was a lack of compliance with Governor Mike DeWine’s statewide mandatory mask order. On my last two trips into a gas station, there were customers without masks and no one questioned them.

Face masks work to help stop the spread of the coronavirus combined with other preventive measures, such as frequent hand-washing and social distancing. And they are one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The statewide health order to enforce mask-wearing in retail locations states that everyone 10 years-old or older must wear a facial covering when in a retail store. Some exclusions may apply, which can be found in DeWine’s original mandatory mask order signed on July 23, 2020. Avoiding gas stations may reduce my chances of being exposed to COVID-19 and it’s possible if there are more people like me, who avoid going places, fewer of us will be exposed. But eventually, I realized that kind of thinking in and of itself is selfish. So I started asking myself what more can be done and what kinds of resources are available to make public places safer for the people who can’t simply avoid them.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office is also accepting complaints via an online form. Additionally, you can find local resources in your area via the list below.
