Hispanic workers learn best milking practices at class taught in Spanish

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Extension Dairy Team will host the hands-on workshop “Best Milking Practices for Hispanics,” taught in Spanish, at four locations around Pennsylvania.

Cost is $25 per person; all sessions are from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Locations

Dates and locations are:

Nov. 6, Lancaster County — Scattered Acres, 900 Galen Hall Road, Reinholds.

Nov. 8, Franklin County — Penn State Extension Office, 181 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg.

Nov. 19, Blair County — The Park at Morrison’s Cove, 201 S. Walnut St., Martinsburg.

Nov. 21 – Mercer County — Hoss’s Steak and Sea House, 1148 Leesburg-Grove City Road, Grove City.

Taught in Spanish, this program provides hands-on training that will reinforce best milking practices, including proper stimulation, teat-end health and the essentials of milk let-down.

Topics

Participants will learn how to milk for speed and teat health; best prepping procedure to reduce mastitis; tools and tips for monitoring milking performance and the importance of early detection of clinical mastitis.

Having a consistent milking routine is basic to producing the highest quality milk and participants will learn the importance of cleanliness, udder massage and rapid milking to good udder health.

They will also gain knowledge of standard operating procedures such as pre-dipping, fore-stripping and drying teats with a single use towel

Clothing

A portion of this workshop will be held on farm, so participants are required to bring footwear that can be sanitized as well as warm and clean clothing. Plastic boots will be provided.

Instructor for the workshops is Greg Strait, Heather Weeks and Ximena del Campo, Penn State Extension educators. This program is eligible for one SmartStart credit from AgChoice Farm Credit.
