God’s promises

How do you define the word, “promise”? I thought a long time about it and finally decided I would use a dictionary. I looked up the word promise and found this definition: promise — a declaration made, as to another person, with respect to the future, giving assurance that one will do, not do, give, not give, etc. something.

When I married my wife, I made a promise to her to love and to cherish her in sickness and in health as long as we both shall live. If I am a man of my word, then I will keep my promise to her until death do us part, unless adultery or other circumstances occur that cannot be healed.

My wife made the same promise to me, so she is just as obligated as I am.

To keep this promise, both man and woman must abide by the word of God. One thing is certain; Satan wants to destroy marriages and homes.

“The Lord will be a refuge for the oppressed; a refuge in times of trouble” (Psalm 9:9).

If for some reason that promise should be broken, none of us have the right to be judgmental, but we should pray one for another.

George Eliot said it well when he said, “We hand folks over to God’s mercy and show none ourselves.”

God keeps His promises to us. “The Lord shall preserve thee from evil; He shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore” (Psalm 121:7-8).

If you make a promise and find it difficult to keep, pray about it and ask God to give you His direction on it.

“Ask, and you shall receive; seek, and you shall find; knock, and the door shall be opened unto you” (Matthew 7:7).

Do your very best to keep your promises to God and to each other.

Think about it!
