Hello again!
Well, we can say it has been a year to remember … 2015 let us plant corn in a timely fashion … then it rained … then it quit raining and as fast as the price of corn went up it came back down!
We harvested a crop in near record time and then we scramble to figure out what to do next. On my FSA side, one of the things as a producer you should be aware of is the many acreage reporting deadlines for 2016.
Pull out your calendar and write them on it now. Acreage reporting is key to the many FSA programs.
Jan. 2 — Report honey and maple sap.
Jan. 15 — Apples, grapes.
May 31 — Report nursery crop acreage.
July 15 — Report all your burley tobacco, cabbage (Planted 3/19/15-5/31/15), corn, grain sorghum, Hybrid corn seed, Spring oats, popcorn, potatoes, soybeans, sugar beets, tomatoes and all other crops.
Aug. 15 — Report cabbage (Planted 6/1/15-7/20/15).
Sept. 30 — Report aquaculture.
Dec. 15 — Fall barley, Fall wheat, and all other Fall-seeded small grains.
As we look ahead to 2016 we can be sure that it will be another challenge, crop prices, weather, livestock prices, milk prices, etc. . .but we are doing what we love … farming.
That’s all for now,
FSA Andy
