Penn State University dispels myths and persistent fallacies about the spotted lanternfly to help those wishing to learn about and combat the pest.

Ohio Department of Agriculture announced a spotted lanternfly quarantine in Jefferson and Cuyahoga counties in Ohio where there are established populations.

A fourth county — Hampshire County — in addition to Jefferson, Berkeley and Mineral, in West Virginia that hosts the spotted lanternfly.

Penn State is asking visitors, especially those coming from areas in which spotted lanternfly is established, to take precautions before traveling.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture confirmed Sept. 2 that a population of the invasive spotted lanternfly was found in Cleveland near the end of August. This insect feeds on grapevines and fruit trees, in addition to other plants, making it a major concern for the grape and wine industries.

A population of the invasive spotted lanternfly has been found on the east side of Cleveland. The initial discovery was made Aug. 26.

Penn State educators emphasized that spotted lanternflies do not bite or sting and their flight behavior is short-lived, lasting a few days.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture needs help in keeping an eye out for the spotted lanternfly. 

Spotted lanternfly was found in Indiana for the first time in Switzerland County the week of July 19, the farthest west the insect has been found.

Research conducted by Penn State scientists has led to an online tool that can help predict seasonal egg hatch for spotted lanternflies.
