Public hearings are set for two new proposed solar farms in central Ohio: Prairie Prairie Solar in Franklin County and Union Ridge in Licking County. There is nearly 4,000 megawatts of solar farms awaiting approval before the Ohio Power Siting Board.

In a rare move, the Ohio Power Siting Board denied Republic Wind's application to build a 200 megawatt wind farm in Seneca and Sandusky counties. Community activists celebrated the rejection, while the developer, Apex Clean Energy, cried foul.

An in-person hearing is set for a 300 MW solar farm planned for Hardin County.  The hearing for Hardin Solar Energy III is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 13 at Kenton High School, 200 Harding Avenue, Kenton, Ohio 43326.

Amazon is building 11 more solar farms in the U.S., including its first in Pennsylvania and another in Ohio. The projects, announced June 23 along with renewables projects in Canada, Finland and Spain, will make the company the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the U.S. and the world.

For many Ohioans, the first time they hear about the Ohio Power Siting Board is when a solar or wind project is proposed in their town. That's also when they find out how little power they have to effect change. SB 52 could change that.

The Ohio Power Siting Board set dates for in-person public hearings to receive input on three new solar projects proposed in Union, Erie and Crawford counties. Public hearings have been held virtually for more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Solar panel manufacturer First Solar announced plans June 9 to build a third facility in northwest Ohio. The $680 million investment will double the company’s U.S. manufacturing capacity and create about 500 jobs. 

The Penn State Solar Law Symposium, set for June 15 and 17, is for lawyers, landowners, educators or others who want to learn about the legal facets of the rapidly growing utility-scale solar industry in Pennsylvania, the region and the country.

A bill that would allow for local say in the approval process for utility-scale wind and solar projects passed the Ohio Senate. Senate Bill 52 passed the Senate Energy and Public Utilities committee in the morning, June 2, and passed the full Senate later that day.

Solar growth is outpacing any other type of new energy generation source in Pennsylvania, but local governments may not be prepared to handle these new projects. A review of the state’s local zoning ordinances found that 87% of zoning codes provide no guidance on solar developments.
