In 2020, 7.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas came out of more than 10,000 unconventional wells in Pennsylvania. That’s the largest volume of natural gas produced in the state in a single year, according to the state's annual Oil and Gas Report.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled June 25 in favor of small refineries, making it easier for them to win exemptions from the federal Renewable Fuel Standard program. A week later, a federal appeals court vacated a 2019 rule that allowed the year-round sale of E15 gasoline.

A new law in Ohio prohibits local governments from banning the use of natural gas and encourages the use of propane. Gov. Mike DeWine signed House Bill 201 into law July 1. Ohio joins more than a dozen states that enacted similar legislation this year.

Public hearings are set for two new proposed solar farms in central Ohio: Prairie Prairie Solar in Franklin County and Union Ridge in Licking County. There is nearly 4,000 megawatts of solar farms awaiting approval before the Ohio Power Siting Board.

Responsibly sourced natural gas is the latest attempt for oil and gas companies to show they are environmentally responsible and socially conscious, but there’s some debate as to whether it’s a green victory or it’s greenwashing.

In a rare move, the Ohio Power Siting Board denied Republic Wind's application to build a 200 megawatt wind farm in Seneca and Sandusky counties. Community activists celebrated the rejection, while the developer, Apex Clean Energy, cried foul.

Driving PA Forward-funded chargers have been installed by companies, organizations and residential complexes at more than 300 locations in 39 counties. More than half the chargers were installed at public places.

An in-person hearing is set for a 300 MW solar farm planned for Hardin County.  The hearing for Hardin Solar Energy III is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 13 at Kenton High School, 200 Harding Avenue, Kenton, Ohio 43326.

Amazon is building 11 more solar farms in the U.S., including its first in Pennsylvania and another in Ohio. The projects, announced June 23 along with renewables projects in Canada, Finland and Spain, will make the company the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the U.S. and the world.

For many Ohioans, the first time they hear about the Ohio Power Siting Board is when a solar or wind project is proposed in their town. That's also when they find out how little power they have to effect change. SB 52 could change that.
