Pennsylvania announced its commitment to buy power from a 191 megawatt solar project that will be built in seven arrays across six counties. Called Pennsylvania PULSE, the project is being touted by the state as the largest government solar energy commitment in the nation to date.

The Ohio Power Siting Board approved the applications for two new utility-scale solar facilities in Madison and Highland counties. The projects would cover more than 3,500 acres of land.

The Ohio Power Siting Board will hold a public hearing June 8 on Clearview Solar I, LLC’s proposal to construct a 144 megawatt solar farm in Adams Township in Champaign County. The project would cover 1,195 acres of land.

Three bills recently introduced in Ohio seek to stop local governments from limiting the use of fossil fuels. Similar legislation has been proposed or passed in several others states in response to some West Coast cities banning natural gas hookups in new construction.

Researchers at Case Western Reserve University developed a new type of coating that could make the photovoltaic cells used to make solar panels last six times longer. This development could dramatically decrease the cost of replacing worn out cells.

Supporters of the Ohio SB 52 and HB 118 say there is a need for more local say in these types of projects and that the current public input process through the Ohio Power Siting Board isn’t effective.
