About 180 miners with Monongalia County Coal Mine in Greene County, Pennsylvania received permanent layoff notices, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.

A bill that would allow for local say in the approval process for utility-scale wind and solar projects passed the Ohio Senate. Senate Bill 52 passed the Senate Energy and Public Utilities committee in the morning, June 2, and passed the full Senate later that day.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection fined Olympus Energy $175,000 for erosion and sedimentation violations at an Allegheny County well pad.

Solar growth is outpacing any other type of new energy generation source in Pennsylvania, but local governments may not be prepared to handle these new projects. A review of the state’s local zoning ordinances found that 87% of zoning codes provide no guidance on solar developments.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission reminded electric customers that all of the state’s electric distribution companies increase prices on June 1 for non-shopping customers. The price jumps range from 2% to 30%.

The Sustainable Resource Facility is a biodigester that will turn the meatpacking plant’s food processing residual into fertilizer and biogas.

Ohio’s agricultural commodity groups spoke out against legislation that proposes giving more local control in the approval process for utility-scale wind and solar projects. The Ohio Pork Council, Cattlemen’s Association, Dairy Producers Association and Poultry Association warned against passing legislation that would infringe on farmers’ private property rights. 

Democratic lawmakers introduced a slew of bills meant to tighten up regulations on Pennsylvania’s shale gas industry. The package of legislation came as a response to last summer’s grand jury report on the unconventional oil and gas industry, which found the DEP failed to protect residents from the health impacts of fracking.

The 200-acre campus in rural Wood County will be powered, in part, by renewable energy, according to a company press release.

The new mechanism for local control was created in part to address concerns from the renewables industry that the original bill would have resulted in a de facto moratorium on large-scale wind and solar development. But the solar industry says it was never consulted on the drafting of the new bill language.
