Mandy Fedinetz, of Primrose Farm, lost her entire laying flock after some birds tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza. Her 1,800 bird flock was culled to stop the spread of the disease.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza, also known as bird flu, has been found in Ashland and Defiance counties, the Ohio Department of Agriculture confirmed Sept. 6.

Grant funding is available now for poultry farmers and integrators impacted by the highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak in Pennsylvania.

Since January, 38 million chickens have died in the U.S. either because of HPAI outbreaks or the culling of flocks where it was found.

This brings Pennsylvania up to nine total commercial flocks impacted by highly pathogenic avian influenza and 3.8 million birds culled preventatively or killed by the disease.

In one week, Pennsylvania went from no cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza to having the second highest number of birds affected in the country. 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed on April 16 a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in a commercial layer chicken flock, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

The ban, in response to the threat of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, takes effect April 16 and will last for 60 days or until the department rescinds the order. 

Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus has been detected in a wild bald eagle found dead in East Marlborough Township, Chester County. This marks the first detection of the HPAI H5N1, or bird flu, in birds within Pennsylvania.
