YOUNGSTOWN – Youngstown State University has plans for establishing a “freedom station” as an affiliate of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, located in Cincinnati.
The center is an organization that examines the historical value of the Underground Railroad movement during the 1800s.
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is located in Cincinnati because the Ohio River symbolized the division between slavery in the South and freedom that existed in the North at that time. Cincinnati was a place that escaping black slaves used to enter into the free North.
The YSU station will serve as an affiliate of the center, supporting the northeast Ohio region. Additionally, the station will create programs based on already existing programs at the Cincinnati location.
