CARROLLTON, Ohio — Twenty-five years ago, Summitcrest Farms was one of the stops on the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association Roundup.
Fast forward to 2010, and the Roundup returns.
The Carroll County Cattlemen’s Association will host the event Aug. 20 -21.
The event will include educational presentations and tours of five cattle operations.
The guest speaker for the event is Steve Foglesong, president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
Advance registration is required for the event and must be made by Aug. 13.
Registration
Cost for Ohio Cattlemen’s Association members for a two-day package is $35; nonmembers, $45. Youth tickets are available at a discounted price. All registrations at the door will be $45.
Single-day registration is also available. Friday’s events are available for $20; Saturday’s, $25.

Friday night
The schedule includes a dinner, two workshops and an evening social, with registration opening at 4:30 p.m.
An official welcome will begin at 5:15 p.m., followed by a presentation by Jerry Yates, manager of West Virginia University’s 996-acre Reymann Memorial Farms, located in Hardy County, W.Va.
Yates previously worked as an ag educator for OSU Extension in Fayette County, Ohio, and was a member of Extension’s statewide Beef Team, helping to develop and promote such programming as Ohio’s Beef 509 and Beef Quality Assurance Program. He served on the 2005 National Beef Quality Assurance Strategic Planning Committee and recently spoke at the second International Animal Welfare Symposium.
He will be taking a look at obstacles and opportunities within the beef industry.
Following dinner, which is set for 6:30 p.m., Fernando Silveira, faculty member in Ohio State University’s Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, will give roundup visitors a look at beef cattle and grazing around the world.
A native of Brazil, Silveira has traveled to such countries as Mexico, China, Israel, Egypt, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Kenya and Sierra Leone to study ruminant production systems and health.
The evening will end with a social event, at the Burgett Angus Farm, 2051 Burrow Road, S.W., Carrollton. It will get under way at 8:45 p.m.
Farm tours
The cattlemen’s roundup tour is the highlight of the annual event, and buses will depart from the Days Inn for the morning tour stops at 8:15 a.m. Aug. 21.
The tours will include the Burgett Angus Farm, Summitcrest Farms, Green Haven Farm, John McKarns farm and Shamrock Vale Farm. (These links take you to previews of each farm and slide shows of the cattle they are producing on them.Take a moment and see what they have to offer.)
Lunch will be provided at one of the farm stops, Summitcrest Farms. The lunch stop will also include a fundraiser for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association political action committee, and an update on the state cattlemen’s association activities and events.
Steve Foglesong, president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and who heads up a diversified livestock, grazing and cropping operation in central Illinois, will be on hand during the tour lunch to give remarks and an update on national issues.
The buses are slated to arrive back at the Days Inn at 5 p.m., to conclude the roundup.
