Salem Public Library Book Discussion Group

The book chosen for the February 28, 2017 Adult Book Discussion Group at Salem Public Library is The Faith Club: A Muslim, a Christian, A Jew–Three Women Search for Understanding by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver, and Priscilla Warner shares three mothers’ discussion of their interfaith beliefs.
At first glance the authors don’t seem to have much in common. Ranya is an American Muslim of Palestinian descent; Suzanne is a Reform Jew; Priscilla is a Christian. Beneath these differences lie similarities. All three are mothers who want to teach their children religious tolerance, and each has a strong belief in her religious identity. In order to learn about each other’s religious traditions they came together to form a “faith club,” meeting regularly to discuss prayer and ritual and the relationship between spirituality and social justice. Over time, the women’s religious commitments evolved: Rayna found a community of like-minded progressive American Muslims; Suzanne began to question some of her commitments to classic Christian doctrine; and Priscilla became more comfortable praying to God. The authors transform potentially dry theological ideals into personal and intimate discussions. This engaging book appropriately concludes with a chapter explaining how to form your own faith club to explore respective religions.
