Yearly Archives: 2005

Don't brag about yourself, what you do or what you have accomplished. While this is surely a directive in some weighty volume of proper behavior, the referenced behavior is that of individuals - not the necessary behavior of a vital, exciting, important industry.

This January's unseasonably warm weather left our snow shovel resting by the back door. It's great, because unless I'm pulling a sled back up the hill below the farmhouse at Dad's, I don't much like tramping through the white stuff, scraping off my vehicles, or driving on slick roads.

I have recently received a fair amount of mail asking me if I have, and I quote, "always lived in the country?" What a silly question.

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Sara Jo Campbell of Sycamore, Greene County, and Clark Farms of Hustontown, Fulton County, showed up the competition to claim the supreme champion heifer and supreme champion bull titles, respectively, during the beef cattle judging held Jan.

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Mazza Vineyards from Northeast, Pa., and the Winery at Wilcox from Wilcox, Pa., were presented the Governor's Cup for the ninth annual Pennsylvania Farm Show Wine Competition.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Producing high-quality forages is one of the best ways to improve animal performance, whether the goal is a higher rate of gain, more pounds of milk or wool production or an enhanced conception rate.

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The 2005 Sale of Champions and Junior Livestock Sale proved a resounding success as the gavel dropped at the 89th Pennsylvania Farm Show with buyers, exhibitors and onlookers filling the standing-room only arena.

WASHINGTON - Ohio's 2004 average corn yield is estimated at 158 bushels per acre, two bushels above the previous state record of 156 set in 2003.

CHARLOTTE - The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation was recognized for outstanding achievements in 2004 during the annual meeting of the American Farm Bureau Federation, Jan.

HARRISBURG, Pa. - It is difficult to ignore the recent tsunami devastation headlining the media. That disaster raises the question: What can be done in our own country, state, county and town to protect our animals in the event of a natural or manmade disaster?
