MORGANTOWN, Pa. — Stoltzfus Spreaders in Morgantown, Pa., was founded by Christian Stoltzfus in 1945 in a five-story stone gristmill with 2,500 square feet of floor space.
Now, the company, which remains family owned and operated, has grown to 25,000 square feet with further expansion and renovation under way.
The business specializes in spreaders for lime, fertilizer, litter, compost, sludge, gypsum, salt, sand, cement and bedding.
It is set up to build any size or shape needed by a customer, and it is not an assembly line.
New machine designs, improved hydraulics and new paint systems were the major accomplishments last year, according to Gary Lake, president.
The decline of major co-ops has created a shortage of customer applicators, Lake said.
This means more growers are buying their own spreaders, he said.
Stoltzfus Spreaders continues to remain competitive by working with employees to streamline production and design safety into the process, Lake said.
Urban sprawl taking prime farmland, however, is a concern, he said.
Stoltzfus Spreaders is open 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
