Hello from Hazard!
Three more readers correctly identified Item No. 703, which we unveiled last week as a livestock dehorner.
We heard from Russell May of Lowell, Ohio; John Dillon of Jewett, Ohio; and Don Bright of Marion, Ohio (who signed his note “Farmer for Life”). Both Dillon and Bright have used the tool to dehorn calves.
We also heard from a reader who, in her own words, “got a real kick out of seeing Item No. 702.”
That’s because the pleater or fluter brought back memories for Jessica Lahl.
“I had two dresses in 1958, a gray one and a blue one. They were very fancy party dresses… made of very stiff, hard and scratchy nylon with rubber band puff sleeves – and I just hated them to death!
“Getting dressed on Sunday morning was a real chore. They were very noisy and also very uncomfortable and miserable to wear.
“They would have been the dresses that were pressed with Item No. 702, although mine never were!
“These dresses had pleats from the waist down that looked like a bunch of spaghetti noodles glued together… the pleats were very tiny and very stiff and hard. I would actually play with the dress when I had it on and no one was looking.
“The one and only good thing about the dress was if I saw cross legged on the floor, the dress would stand up from the waist to the floor on its own, almost like plywood, and look like a tent!”
Hazard hopes Jessica wasn’t scarred for life (but it was fun to read about her dresses!).

Item No. 704 didn’t fool anyone: It’s a nutcracker.
Russel King of Zanesville, Ohio, sent in a correct answer, as did Heidi Pfeil of West Jefferson, Ohio, and Gailey Henderson of Williamstown, W.Va.
Our thanks for Herman Miller of Adamsville, Ohio, for sharing the photograph.
