Hello from Hazard!

Jack Carpenter of Townville, Pa., sent in another correct answer to Item No. 634, the tire tool used to dismount tires from old split rims. He’s actually used this tool to change a tire, so he knows what he’s talking about.

It wasn’t intentional, but Item No. 635 continued our car theme. It’s a pliers used to repair bad cross links in tire chains. Manson Smith of Vienna, Ohio, was the first to correctly identify out gizmo. He’s got a model that bears that date 1910, too. John Borkowski of Kirtland, Ohio, says the pointed part was used to open the end link, then the cut-out part was used to close the end link. He’s also used them many times when chains were needed to get around (anyone from Kirtland – in the midst of the Snow Belt – should know!).

I think I’ll take it easy on you this week, with Item No. 636, sent in a long time ago by Fred Heaberlin of New Castle, Pa. Now, I realize some of you will know what it is right away, but remember, others may not, so while you’re sending in your answers, add some of your recollections of using this gadget. Every once in a while, we need to remember how fortunate we have it these days!
