80 years ago this week. The Ohio State Grange has a greater membership than any other farm organization in the state, and possibly greater than any other state. The annual membership total is 107,353 members. The Ohio Farm Bureau membership stood at 97,000.
An ad for the Fordson Tractor ($625 f.o.b. Detroit) quotes Henry Ford: “The tractor will enable the farmer to work fewer hours in the day, giving him more time to enjoy life. I believe the tractor will make farming what it ought to be – the most pleasant, the most healthful, the most profitable business on earth.”
50 years ago this week. The old-time quilting bee staged in primitive setting by a group of women dressed in period costumes will be an innovation at this year’s Canfield Fair. The actual quilting will feature the Dresden plate pattern. Fourteen women’s groups are participating in the demonstration, including women’s extension, church, Grange, and community groups. A feature of the event will be the primitive setting consisting of a shoemaker’s bench, a hutch table, a wool wheel, a corner cupboard, a dry sink, pewter, glass, china, and other interesting items provided by Ann Dunlea.
25 years ago this week. Ohio farm real estate values rose to an averaged $870 per acre, as of March 1, 1976, a 21 percent increase over the previous year. Nationwide, the average was $403. Cash rents paid in Ohio are: farms, $41.80 per acre; cropland, $47.80 per acre; and pasture, $18 per acre.
Olympic and world champion figure skater, Dorothy Hamill, will headline the Ice Capades opening at the Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio. Hamill captured Olympic gold in Innsbruck, Austria, in February 1976.
