Wayne County Junior Fair livestock auction garners $476,229

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Wayne County community turned out to support 4-H and FFA members selling animals in the junior fair livestock auction.
Proceeds from the two-day auction totaled $476,229.20. In return, the 4-H and FFA members supported the community through donations to school programs, local fire departments, hospitals, the Red Cross, Cancer Society and 4-H Scholarship and Endowment Funds.
The two-day auction got under way with the dairy products auction. The sale of 24 items – ranging from framed prints, a toy tractor, hand painted churn, wood items and promotional items – netted $17,060 to be divided among 114 junior fair dairy exhibitors.
Livestock. The first day of the livestock auction saw two rabbit meat pens, eight meat pens of poultry, 41 goats and 93 lambs paraded through the sale ring.
Service Master Clean purchased Arielle Kinney’s champion rabbit meat pen for $525, while the reserve champion rabbit meat pen owned by Austin Berry was purchased by Steiner Painting and Remember When Agricultural Museum for $350.
The champion chicken meat pen owned by Kierstyn Wood and was purchased by Keating Concessions for $800, while Gerber Poultry purchased the reserve champion chicken meat pen owned by Brendan Piper for $400.
The champion duck meat pen owned by David Lilburn sold for $450 to Best Buy and www.Beerys.com, while the reserve champion duck meat pen owned by Jillian Saurer, sold for $325 to Marie Moore.
Nicholas Miller sold his champion goose meat pen for $525 to Western Reserve Group, while Morrison Farms, Best Buy and www.Beerys.com went together to buy the reserve champion goose meat pen owned by David Lilburn for $200.
The champion turkey meat pen owned by Julia Zollinger sold for $625 to Stout Excavating, Carl Finley Builders and Stull’s Lazer Light Therapy.
The reserve champion turkey meat pen owned by Benjamin Kerner sold for $275 to Best Buy and Jim Palm Financial.
Goats. Jillian Hastings’ 115-pound grand champion goat sold for $6 per pound to the Western Reserve Group, while Kara Schwanger’s 103-pound reserve champion goat sold for $3 per pound to Best Buy and www.Beerys.com.
Forty-one market goats sold for a total of $10,152. Chelsea Odenkirk’s 144-pound champion market lamb sold for $7.50 a pound to Real Estate Showcase, while Hannah Wirth’s 143-pound reserve champion market lamb sold for $3.75 a pound to Steve Andrews, auctioneer.
Ninety-three market lambs sold for a total of $24,585.45.
The second day of the auction got under way with the sale of Mitchell Murray’s 268-pound champion market hog to Burge Trucking, Gasser Electric, Lodi Lumber and Santmyer Oil for $11 per pound.
Prestige Plumbing purchased David Devore’s 264-pound reserve champion market hog for $5.75 per pound.
Two-hundred sixty-six market hogs sold for a total of $193,237.50.
Beef. Andrew Castella’s 1,320-pound grand champion beef steer was purchased by Dorothy Smith for $6 per pound, while Garrett Uhler’s 1,320-pound reserve grand champion beef steer was purchased by Shearer Equipment/Tricor Industrial Supply for $3.10 per pound.
David Hayhurst’s 1,330-pound champion Wayne County bred and raised steer sold for $2.50 per pound to Nu-Way Housing, while Carli Gasser’s 1,340-pound reserve champion Wayne County bred and raised steer was purchased by Ron Burge Trucking for $2.10 per pound.
Nessa Shoup’s 860-pound champion carcass steer was purchased by Maibach Ford for $2.50 per pound, while Josh Ousley’s 818-pound reserve champion carcass steer was purchased by Santmyer Oil for $3.75 per pound.
Elizabeth Shoup’s 1,630-pound grand champion dairy steer was purchased by National City Bank for $2.25 per pound, while Lindsay Shoup’s 1,645-pound reserve grand champion dairy steer was purchased by Waynedale Truss and Panel for $2.10 per pound.
The sale of 86 beef steers, 28 dairy steers and two carcass steers totaled $243,779.25.
