WOOSTER – Students in the horticulture program at Wayne County Schools Career Center were recognized for their accomplishments during the FFA chapter’s annual student recognition banquet at Hawkins’ Cafeteria in Wooster.
Kesia Hartzler was selected as the Star Chapter Farmer. She served as an officer in the chapter, was a member of floriculture and landscaping teams as well as participating in the floral design show at the Home and Garden Show. Hartzler also received awards for scholarship and perfect attendance.
Katie Ward was selected as the chapter’s most improved senior member. Paul Horst was recognized as the Star Greenhand and also received awards for scholarship and perfect attendance.
Esther Griffith was selected as the chapter’s most improved junior member. She was the chapter’s top fruit salesperson and is a member of the Skills Classic team.
Student recognition. Other students recognized during the banquet included seniors Amy Schar for scholarship and achievement; Vanessa Horst for scholarship and achievement; and Kevin Wellert for winning the district job interview contest and placing second at the state, achievement and perfect attendance.
Junior members receiving special awards included Nick Kramer for perfect attendance; Zack Thompson for scholarship and achievement; Tessa Horst for scholarship; Valerie Byrd for achievement; and Jason Wenger for achievement.
In addition to the fruit sales, the chapter also plants strawberries for an area business. The top planters were Kesia Hartzler, Vanessa Horst, Paul Horst and Eric Rogers.
Chapter leaders. During the year, the chapter was involved in numerous community service projects including Outdoor Education for Southeast Local School District, plant education at Marshallville Elementary, and landscaping an area home.
Serving as officers for 2002-2003 will be Tessa Horst, president; Paul Horst, vice president; Valerie Byrd, secretary; Eric Rogers, treasurer; Nick Kramer, sentinel; Zack Thompson, reporter; and Megan Shaw, student adviser.
