SMITHVILLE, Ohio – Students in the horticulture program at the Wayne County Schools Career Center were recognized for their accomplishments during their annual banquet at The Old School House Restaurant in Smithville.
Senior award. Melissa Flinn was named as the program’s outstanding senior and also received the Monsanto Award in recognition of desire to excel in agriculture.
Flinn, of Burbank, Ohio, has served as the chapter’s president, and as a member of both the floriculture and the landscaping teams.
She has been employed at Cedar Lane Greenhouse for two years and her duties include transplanting plants, laying down flats and pulling orders.
Her supervised agricultural experience projects include goats, a horse project and raising hay and grain.
Best of the best. Courtney Blackwell was recognized as the best floral design technician, while Logan Homer was selected as the best greenhouse technician.
Glenn Weber was named as the best turf maintenance technician.
Bob Marthey was recognized for the highest GPA in the program, outstanding leadership and planting the most strawberries as part of a chapter moneymaking project.
Gus Musica was named as the outstanding junior in the program. He is serving as an officer in the chapter and is an alternate member of the floriculture team.
Awards. Chris Shawver was named as the most improved student in the program, while Megan Morris was recognized as having the most positive attitude.
Morris and Andrew Moore were also recognized for attendance.
Becky Fath was recognized for the neatest and most accurate notebook. Jewelinh Fuqua was recognized as the top citrus fruit salesperson in the chapter.
Appreciation awards were presented to Regina Jacobs and Barb Houmard for their support of the chapter and its activities.
