MILLERSBURG, Ohio – While the northeastern portion of the country was dealing with stifling heat and blackout conditions, the lights were on and the bids were hot during the two-day junior fair livestock auction at the 2003 Holmes County Junior Fair.
Day One. The first day of the two-day auction saw the sale of Curt Lorentz’s 132-pound champion market lamb for $9 a pound to Loudonville Farmer’s Equity.
Atty. Paul Miller and Comfort Inn and Comfort Suites in Berlin bid $8.50 a pound for Anne Parsons’ 129-pound reserve champion market lamb.
Heidi Brown’s 265-pound champion market hog was purchased for $9 a pound by Cherokee Builders while the Paul Miller family bid $8 a pound for Mindy Kick’s 251-pound reserve champion market hog.
Day Two. The second day of the auction got under way with the sale of Luke Schrock’s 722-pound dairy feeder for $4.25 a pound to Walnut Creek Cheese and Berlin Contractors.
Rodhe’s IGA and Farmer’s Produce Auction bid $2 a pound for Lorraine Strouse’s 730-pound reserve champion dairy feeder.
Charlie Boyer’s champion turkey was purchased by Rodhe’s IGA and Real Estate Showcase, and Dave Hall and Bob Gibbs bid $500 for Kelly Hershberger’s reserve champion turkey.
Main Street Pizza and Subs and Vern’s Concessions bid $475 for Tosha Kandel’s champion pen of broilers. Lisa Grassbaugh, Metropolitan Life, bid $475 for Logan Darr’s reserve champion pen of broilers.
The Pizza Parlor in Shreve bid $750 for Kevin Klingler’s champion pen of meat rabbits, and Mrs. Yoder’s Kitchen bid $500 for Jesse McClure’s reserve champion pen of meat rabbits.
Goats. State Rep. Bob Gibbs, county commissioner David Hall, Joe Miller and Jackie McKee bid $3 for Heidi Brown’s 93-pound champion dairy type meat goat.
The Pizza Parlor in Shreve bid $1.75 a pound for Julia Havener’s 67-pound reserve champion dairy type meat goat.
The Pizza Parlor in Shreve also bid $2 a pound for Daniel Klingler’s 99-pound champion meat type market goat, while Kevin Klingler’s 91-pound reserve champion meat type market goat for $1.85 a pound to Wal-Mart.
Champion steers. Kelly Hershberger’s 1,256-pound champion market steer was purchased by Denco Marketing for $7.25 a pound, and Cherokee Builders bid $4.25 for Randy Clinage’s 1,260-pound reserve champion market steer.
Killbuck Savings Bank bid $2.30 a pound for Ryan Sowers’ 1,250-pound champion Holmes County-bred steer.
Jodi Reutter’s 1,370-pound champion dairy steer was purchased by Rodhe’s IGA and The Grocery Bag for $1.60 a pound, while Real Estate Showcase and Kauffman Realty bid $1 a pound for Melissa Hershberger’s 1,500-pound reserve champion dairy steer.
