WOOSTER, Ohio — There are few businesses that reach the 100-year mark, and even fewer that stay around 150 years. But Curry Lumber in Wooster, Ohio, will celebrate its 160th year in August, an achievement that happens only when a company is committed to serving its customers at the highest level.
Curry Lumber, located at 331 West Henry Street, Wooster, is technically the DC Curry Lumber Company.
Founded in 1853 by James Curry, the business was renamed in honor of James’ son, David C. Curry, who was injured in the Civil War, thus the name, DC Curry Lumber Company. It stands as Ohio’s second oldest corporation.
Modern growth
Today, the company has 24 full-time employees and four part-time employees, and has been a leader in the post frame construction industry since the 1950s.
But the construction service doesn’t end with pole buildings, according to Curry Lumber’s David Nally. DC Curry Lumber also has building materials for residential, agricultural and commercial construction.
Curry had provide handle just about any construction project you have, from decks and porches to additions, or from barn renovation to storm damage repair. The Curry crews can handle spouting, garage doors, roofing and custom millwork projects.
As member of the Do It Best Corporation, Curry Lumber is able to pull from its warehouse, so there’s a short turn-around of building material orders, and items, including small household items, can be delivered to Curry on a weekly basis.
Independent lumber yards, like Curry, are increasingly pressured by big box chain stores, Nally said, but customer service lets them stand out.
“Curry has been able to join co-ops and buying groups, and leverage our buying power, along with thousands of other lumber yards across the country, to assure a steady supply of material that is received timely and competitive,” Nally said.
The company recently added a new showroom and idea center, where sales staff are available to meet one-on-one with customers, and offer computer-aided drafting of projects with a variety of design options.
“More and more, customers seek out qualified, reputable construction companies,” said Nally. “Our business and future is built upon satisfied customers.”
He said the company’s goal is to gather efficiencies that will let it provide timely customer service in every area of the business.
“Our long-term goal is to remain a viable provider of post frame materials and construction services, while keeping up with the changing, safety, energy and technology challenges in our industry.”
The company is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, 8 a.m. until noon. You can give them a call at 330-264-5223 or visit them online at their newly redesigned website, www.currylumber.com/.
