SALEM, Ohio – An investigation continues into a July 21 tractor accident that sent an Ashtabula County farmer to Cleveland Metro Hospital by lifeflight.
Hugh C. Hamilton was eastbound on Woodworth Road at the Cherry Valley and Wayne Township line when he drove a 1997 John Deere 8300 and grain wagon into the path of a southbound train.
According to neighbors, there are no lights or stopping guards at the uphill crossing.
Tractor split. State Highway Patrol reports indicate that after impact, the front end of the tractor went off the right side of the road and into a ditch. The rear wheels and grain wagon Hamilton had been pulling remained on the roadway.
Hamilton sustained injuries including a broken vertebrae in his back and a number of cuts and scrapes. Hamilton underwent surgery July 22 to repair a severely broken arm, according to family members.
