What has happened to the word “conduct?” I recall when I was a young man growing up, the word conduct was often mentioned in our home and school.
It was instilled in me by my parents that I practice good conduct in my everyday life. It was unheard of to walk in front of a lady. It was the normal thing to open and hold a door for a lady.
Words like “thank you,” “please,” “pardon me” and “excuse me” were very important and regularly used in everyday living. It was very rare to ever heard foul language used in front of children or a lady.
We were taught, “Evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Corinthians 15:33).
The lack of good conduct is very easily identified in our actions and words. My mother used to tell me if I would use a bad word or a word that was inappropriate or disrespectful, she was going to wash my mouth out with soap. Fortunately, I never had my mouth washed out with soap due to the words “fear” and “respect.”
The bible teaches us good conduct. Here are just a few verses that confirm these teachings.
“Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile” (Psalm 34:13). “Whatsoever ye do in word or in deed, do all to the glory of God” (Colossians 3:17).
There is much more to say about conduct; however, due to my space limitations I am unable to share much more in this article.
I believe by practicing good conduct, we could revive our respect for our families, each other, our schools, our leaders, our marriages, and above all, our Almighty God.
“Life is not so short but that there is always room for courtesy” (Ralph Waldo Emerson).
THINK ABOUT IT!
