HARRISBURG, Pa. — The annual Sale of Champions kicked off the Junior Livestock Sale Jan. 8 with top market animals bringing in $42,400, at the 2013 Pennsylvania Farm Show.
♦ Center stage stood Beau, the 1,330-pound grand champion market steer, owned by Samantha Fabian, 18, of Acme, Fayette County. Hoss’s Steak and Sea House, a longtime supporter of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Market Livestock Sale, won the top bid of $11,500.
♦ Hayden Deminak, 12, of Carmichaels, Greene County, sold his grand champion market lamb for $5,000 to Bell and Evans.
♦ Jake Ritenour, 15, of Acme, Fayette County, exhibited the grand champion market goat, which sold to New Holland Sales Stables for $3,500.
♦ Hatfield Quality Meats and Giant Food Stores purchased the grand champion market hog, owned by Tee Pecora of Harrison City, Westmoreland County, for $6,000.
♦ Fulton Bank, Bell & Evans Poultry and Lebanon Valley Auction Services collaborated to purchase Chandler Carey’s reserve grand champion market lamb for $2,500. Carey is from Montoursville, Lycoming County.
♦ The reserve grand champion market goat, owned by Racole Sproul of Acme, Fayette County, was sold to New Holland Sales and Stables for $3,300.
♦ Sydney Kimmel of Plumsville, Armstrong County, sold her reserve grand champion market hog to Hatfield Quality Meats and Giant Food Stores for $4,600.
♦ Rounding out the Sale of Champions was Logan Foore of Seven Valleys, York County, who sold his reserve grand champion steer to Saubel’s Market for $6,000.
Total sale
The total gross for the sale was $293,120 for 425 animals. Prior to the sale, 25 youth were presented with $87,500 in scholarships.
The Sale of Champions helps to fund a portion of the scholarships along with donations from members of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Scholarship Foundation.
Outstanding 4-H leaders were honored for the sixth consecutive year during the livestock sale. Robert Mikesell, professor at Penn State University and junior livestock committee chairperson, coordinated the application process and presented the awards.
♦ Ira J. Coble 4-H Beef Leader Award: Lesa Ohler, a 13-year leader in the High Ridge 4-H Club in Rockwood, Somerset Co.
♦ Pennsylvania 4-H Sheep Leader Award: Margaret Gevin, a 23-year 4-H leader in Cochranton, Crawford Co.
♦ Pennsylvania 4-H Swine Leader Award: Betty Wingert, a 38-year leader in 4-H Pig Club in St. Thomas, Franklin Co.
