Ohio youth excels at Hereford expo

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Hereford steers came from near and far to compete in the sixth annual Junior National Hereford Expo in Milwaukee, Wis., July 13.
Ohio winner. Brandon Klehm, Minerva, Ohio, led the way in the ultrasound contest with his 1,271-pound steer. The steer scanned a ribeye area of 15 square inches, 37-inch backfat and a 5.80 marbling score, which calculated a 232 yield grade and a 788-pound carcass.
Matthew Kitchell, Ada, Minn., claimed the reserve ultrasound placing with his steer by DAN Basic Option 36K.
Top honors. At the end of the show, the grand champion steer banner and award went to Kagney Collins.. Flanagan, Ill., with her 1,197-pound steer by H 8E Embracer 8006.
In the reserve champion spot, Brooke Jensen, Courtland, Kan., got her second show off to a good start with a 1,086-pound steer by KJ 520E VICTOR 417L.
Jensen kept her winning streak rolling thoughout the week and was named the champion peewee showman and showed the grand champion cow-calf pair.
Largest ever. The 2005 show will go down in the history books as the largest junior Hereford show to date, with 1,143 entries exhibited by 630 National Junior Hereford Association members.
