MARYSVILLE, Ohio – Beef breeders from Farm and Dairy country exhibited a number of grand and reserve champion bulls and heifers at the 2002 Ohio Beef Expo, March 15-17 in Columbus.
Winners by breed in the open show include:
Angus. Paradise Cattle Co., Ashville, Ohio, champion bull; Rains Angus, Mercer, Pa., reserve champion bull; Tyler Weisel, Louisville, Ohio, champion female; O’Hayes Farms, Cumberland, Ohio, reserve champion female.
The Angus sale grossed $197,000; 52 bulls sold averaged $1,765, and 51 females averaged $2,102.
Gelbvieh. Knicely Cattle Co., Norwich, Ohio, champion bull; Maple Valley Farm, Hillsboro, Ohio, reserve champion bull; Hilltop Haven Farm, Strange Creek, W.Va, champion female; Maple Valley Farm, reserve champion female.
Eleven Gelbvieh cows and bulls sold to buyers from four states.
Hereford. NS Polled Herefords, Mason, Ohio, champion bull; JJ Detwiler Land and Cattle, Salesville, Ohio, reserve champion bull; Spring Lane Farm, Leetonia, Ohio, champion female; JJ Detwiler Land and Cattle, reserve champion female.
The Hereford sale grossed $70,700; 8 bulls sold averaged $2,331, and 24 females averaged $1,895. Two flushes sold for an average of $2,575.
Limousin. Double G Farms, West Alexandria, Ohio, champion bull; Circle L Limousin, Burbank, Ohio, reserve champion bull; Day Limousin, Castalia, Ohio, champion female; Van Horn Limousin, Malta, Ohio, reserve champion female.
The Limousin sale grossed $45,875; 16 bulls sold averaged $1,638, and 12 females averaged $1,740; 25 semen straws sold for an average of $60.
Shorthorn. Brookwood Farms, Franklin, W.Va., champion bull; Rob Smith and Family, Millersburg, Ohio, reserve champion bull; Bill Fugate, Linden, Ind., champion female; Hobby Horse Farm, Kingston, Ohio, reserve champion female.
The Shorthorn sale grossed $127,900; 19.5 bulls sold averaged $1,912, and 36 females averaged $2,280. Three embryos sold at an average of $2,860.
Simmental. Circle S Simmentals, Cygnet, Ohio, futurity champion; Jim and Elain Hatfield, Greenfield, Ohio, futurity reserve champion; Circle L Simmental, Cygnet, Ohio, champion female; Cody Spooner, Claysville, Pa., reserve champion female.
The Simmental sale grossed $117,855; six bulls sold averaged $2,383.33, and 45 females averaged $1,827.22. Four cow-calf pairs sold for an average of $2,900; 18 embryos sold at an average of $137.77. Five semen straws also sold at an average of $110.

Other sales. The Chianina sale grossed $15,000; three bulls sold averaged $1,183, and seven females averaged $1,375. Four embryos sold at an average of $456.25 for a gross of $1,825.
The Maine-Anjou sale grossed $215,700. Bull average was $2,306.25 and female average was $2,230.10.
