CANFIELD, Ohio – The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers will try to set new records when at the ninth annual weigh-off Oct. 4.

The current state record, 1,140 pounds, is held by Dave Stelts of Leetonia, Ohio. The world record is held by the late Charles Houghton of New Hampshire at 1,337.6 pounds.

The excessive rainfall has played havoc with crops this year, but coordinators still expect 10 pumpkins to weigh in between 900 and 1,200 pounds.

Weigh-off. The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers is comprised of 275 members and Parks Garden Center, U.S. Route 62, Canfield, is a regional weigh-off site for the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth.

The Great Pumpkin Commonwealth conducts weigh-offs at 23 sites in North America to determine the world champion.

Parks Garden Center will be the official clearing house for results from all over North America.

The heaviest pumpkins will be weighed between 11 a.m. and noon.
