MOUNT PLEASANT, Ohio – The Mount Pleasant Historical Society will hold its annual Christmas Walk, Dec. 2-3, beginning at noon Saturday at the gazebo in the center of town. The walk dates are 1-7 p.m., both days.

The festivities will begin with the dedication of the Mount Pleasant Historic Underground Railroad District Marker. This marker will symbolize that the entire village of Mount Pleasant participated in aiding fugitive slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad.

Red Underground Railroad flags identify the five stations within the village that are documented and have known hiding places.

The marker will be located in front of the Historical Center, at the comer of Union and Concord Streets. The public is invited and refreshments will be served in the Burriss Store, where those going on the walk may purchase their tickets and maps.

Visitors will have an opportunity to view three private homes this year. They are the A.R. Hope House, the M. Alexander House and the M. Terrell House. These homes will be decorated by their owners and each one has their unique style.

In addition to the decorated homes, the society’s sites will be opened also. Tickets and maps are purchased at the Burriss Store. Here you can see a general store with original equipment such as scales, cash register, cheese case, a count register, etc.

The John Gill House will be decorated in holiday finery with trees in many of the rooms. The Elizabeth House Tea Room will be offering light lunches including homemade soup and sandwiches.

The Quaker Yearly Meeting House will be open from 1-4 p.m. The Tin Shop will also be open for visitors to view original equipment dating to the Civil War.

Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children 5-18. Children under 5 are admitted free. There is free parking available.

The proceeds from this event benefit the Historical Society of Mount Pleasant. For additional information, contact Sherry Sawchuk at 740-769-2893.
