BURTON, Ohio – Maple producers from across northern Ohio will gather for the annual Maple Days in Northern Ohio.
The maple producers meetings will take place in three locations from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting with Mount Gilead in Marrow County, Jan. 14; Fredericksburg in Wayne County, Jan. 15; and Burton Village in Geauga County, Jan. 16.
Special interest. Of special interest to producers will be the annual trade show and roundup table discussion held Jan. 15 from 5-9 p.m. in Burton Village. The roundup table discussion begins at 7 p.m.
The theme for this year’s meeting is Producing a Quality Product Sap to Syrup. Covering this topic will be Henry Marcus, Consumer Assurance Supervisor from the Vermont Department of Agriculture, Food and Markets.
Marcus will explain how maple syrup can pick up off-flavors through the sap-to-syrup process and how this can be prevented.
Besides flavor, another important factor Marcus will discuss is protecting the quality of syrup once it is in the container.
Other speakers. The program will include northeast district natural resources specialist, Gary Graham, and Ohio State University Extension forester, Randy Heiligmann.
Graham ‘s topic will be developing and maintaining sugar bush trails and roads for safety, sugarbush health and maintenance.
Heiligmann will discuss maple syrup product testing and voluntary inspections and the latest information and procedures concerning the maple industry.
