The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has officially recommended a daily cap on added sugars in Americans’ diets. According to The New York Times, this is the first time a daily cap has been recommended.
The daily cap is no more than 10 percent of daily calories consumed. To put that into perspective, a can of Coke contains almost as much as that amount of sugar. FDA is recommending that children ages 1 to 3 consume no more than 25 grams of sugar daily.
Added sugars can be found in the usual culprits: soft drinks, candy, sugary cereal and desserts. But they’re also found in low-fat yogurt, granola bars, prepared soups and more.
