Reuters reports that this year’s outbreak of avian influenza will likely contribute to the a rise in retail turkey prices this Thanksgiving. Nine million turkeys were wiped out this year by the virus.
At the end of September there were 268.0 million pounds of frozen turkeys in stock in the U.S., down 29.2 million pounds from September 2014. While turkey numbers are down, they will still be available for purchase. Analysts predict that prices will not be as low as last year.
Last year, the average overall cost of a Thanksgiving dinner was $49.41 for a family of 10. The turkey cost an average of $1.35 per pound.
