YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Arms Family Museum of Local History will host a preview party for the new exhibit Heart & Heat: A History of Fighting Fire in the Mahoning Valley Feb. 2 from 5-7 p.m.
The exhibition opens to the public Feb. 3.
Heart & Heat will outline the history of firefighting in the Mahoning Valley from the formation of its earliest companies to the present.
Specific areas will include changing technology in fire fighting and prevention, dramatic moments in Valley firefighting, the educational role of fire department personnel in the community, and the changing faces of firefighters over the last 30 years.
The exhibit also includes several child-friendly activities such as artifacts that can be handled and uniforms that may be tried on.
Besides MVHS holdings, the exhibit will feature artifacts, photographs and paintings loaned by area fire departments. In spite of their busy schedules, many departments have donated much time and information to making this exhibit a success.
The exhibit will remain open through July. It is a preview to a major exhibit, opening after 2002, that will tell the story of emergency personnel in the Valley.
The Friday evening Preview Party will cost $5 for Society members, firefighters and fire department personnel, and $7 for nonmembers. Light refreshments will be served.
