Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness” Psalm 95:8. The prophet Jeremiah brings to our attention that God is like the potter and the people are much like clay.
We find this in Jeremiah 18:16. We are clay in the potter’s hands. He can mold our lives into something beautiful if we will be willing to turn our lives over to Him. In order to do this God looks at our heart.
The Bible says in Heb. 3:15, “Today if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” When I was a boy, one of our greatest enjoyments was to get a piece of clay and make little houses and people out of it.
However, the clay had to be soft in order for it to be molded. If the clay was hard it would crumble and be useless. In order for it to be useful again you had to add water to it to make it pliable. With all the things that are going on in our world today, it would be very easy for our hearts to grow cold and hard.
There are many people who are going through difficult times of discouragement and defeat. I have heard some people say they see no hope for the future. Looking at things today as they are, we must be on guard or our hearts can easily become hard.
God has a better way for us. Hardening your heart by no means will make things better. The end result of hardening your heart is things become worse. Remember we are the clay and God is the potter. He has the power to mold our lives according to His will. We must do everything possible no matter what is taking place around us, to keep our lives in His hands.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life: of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1. Harden not your heart. Do everything possible to live at peace with your fellowmen.
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee” Isaiah 26:3.
If you have a friend, neighbor, or loved one going through a difficult time, do not pass him by. “Harden not your heart.”
Take time to share your kindness and concern. It will prevent your heart from growing hard. “Let not your heart be troubled, ye believe in God; believe also in me” John 14:1.
Let God make something beautiful out of your life today. You will be glad you did!
