HARRISBURG, Pa. – Fifty-five years in the sheep industry, hard work and determination have paid off for the J.L. and G.L. Diehl farms as they exhibited a flock of Shropshire breeding sheep at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition.
The show was held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pa.
Cleaning up. Owner Gale Diehl won various awards including premier breeder and premier exhibitor.
The Diehl farms’ sheep also won the titles of champion sale ewe, reserve champion sale ewe, yearling sale ewe, fall ewe, fall ram and pair of rams.
Diehl, along with son John and grandsons Chris and Mike, have exhibited their flock at livestock shows including numerous county fairs and the National Shropshire Show held at the Ohio State Fair.
On their Deerfield, Ohio, farm, the family raises beef cattle and approximately 45 brood ewes that birthed 75 lambs for market and breeding projects this past lambing season.
“The results of the show tell me that our breeding program has been successful for the past few years. We seem to be moving in the right direction,” said Diehl.
Great facility. Diehl also stated that he prefers to attend this show over others. He and more than 1,400 other exhibitors at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition were under a new roof this year after recent renovation of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex.
“The expansion has allowed exhibitors more space to prepare their animals for show, as well as provided additional areas for the livestock to be showcased and sold,” stated Secretary of Agriculture Dennis C. Wolff.
