Dairy science recognition: Thorbahn now in Hall of Service

PLAIN CITY, Ohio – Tom Thorbahn of Vickery, Ohio, was inducted into the Ohio State University Dairy Science Hall of Service at the Buckeye Dairy Club Recognition Banquet held May 7.
The Hall of Service recognition has been presented annually since 1952 and is designed to recognize individuals who have provided a service to the dairy industry of Ohio.
Portraits of those selected are presented each year at the banquet and are on display in the Hall of Service in Plumb Hall on the Ohio State University Campus in Columbus.
Nomination. Thorbahn was nominated for this award by Ohio Holstein Association and received its letter of support along with supporting letters from John Meyer, chief executive officer of Holstein USA, and Jeff King.
Meyer said, “In today’s society where there are far too few role models, it is good to know we have an outstanding one in Tom.”
Crimson Lane. Thorbahn has been a part of the operating partnership of Crimson Lane Holsteins for 35 years with his father, Lewis, and brother, Lewis II.
The farming operation includes 1,300 acres and 50 Registered Holsteins.
Thorbahn received the Sandusky County Farmer of the Year award in 1995.
Background. He is a graduate of Ohio State University with a degree in dairy science and has 20 years of experience, concurrently with dairy farming, as a genetic mating evaluator for ABS Global Inc.
Thorbahn served as an officer for the Ohio Holstein Association for 11 years and was treasurer of the National Holstein Convention held in Ohio in 2000.
His knowledge of genetics, cattle evaluation, herd management, marketing and finances has been beneficial not only to the Ohio Holstein Association but also to the national Holstein Association where he serves as an at-large board member.
Both the Ohio and national associations praised Thorbahn for his communication skills in speaking and writing.
Youth, committees. Thorbahn has served for nearly 20 years as a 4-H youth development volunteer.
Thorbahn also was on the marketing panel for the Ohio Dairy Industry Strategic Planning Task Force, the Ohio State University Extension Advisory Committee, County Extension Advisory Committee and county dairy board.
He has judged district and local cattle shows, science fairs and 4-H projects.
Others. Also inducted into the Dairy Science Hall of Service for 2005 was Glen Hoffis, recently retired dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the Ohio State University.
Recognition and awards were presented to Ohio State University students in the animal science department and Buckeye Dairy Club.
