Dairy program teaches the basics

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Dairyman Matt Ulmer has a confession to make: He hasn’t always liked working with cows.
A surprising admission from a young man raised on the family dairy farm in Bellefonte, Pa., and now its assistant manager. Ulmer explains it this way.
“Even though I grew up on a farm, I wasn’t really confident working directly with the cows. I guess I was uncomfortable because I didn’t know how to handle them in certain situations.”
Program helped. But that was before he enrolled in the new Penn State Dairy Production Skills Certificate program launched last fall by Dairy Alliance.
