About 2,000 snow geese on their return flight home to Alaska were found dead in southeastern Idaho, The Washington Post reports.
Experts believe that the snow geese were victims of avian cholera, due to how quickly the birds died. Once exposed to the bacteria, birds can die within six to 12 hours, although it may take 24 to 48 hours. It’s so sudden that birds commonly fall out of the sky without previous sign of the disease.
Officials have removed and burned the birds’ carcasses to deter other birds from feeding on the infected birds.
